Patience Is A Virtue…That I Don’t Have

Navy shirt dress with floppy hat and boots
When spring first comes you can often hear me talking about how I wish I didn’t have to work inside and what I wouldn’t give to sit outside on my computer when I need to be doing indoor things. Come fall, I am SO glad I do work inside if only because of my lack of patience in waiting for fall to come. It has been much cooler here in Austin in the mornings, but other than that it has been 80+ degrees pretty consistently for the past few weeks. We have had a day or two here and there of cooler weather, but for the most part it has been warm. The reason I am so glad I work inside during the fall is because then I get to wear all of my pretty fall clothes and layers and it doesn’t bother me:) I have to dress for the real weather on Mondays because Monday is errand day, but other than that I am in full fall force! Looking at me while I’m at work, you would think it was 60 degrees outside daily. I’m sure my boss and the men at work all think I am crazy, but I just love fall fashion too much to miss out on any of it! When I get home from work I always have to “Texify” my fall outfits if we are going anywhere or eating out that night…but for the daytime I get to dream that it really is 60 outside. Don’t worry, I still love my hot Texas weather, I’ll be over fall by November and back to bragging that it’s 80 when it’s 40 everywhere else:)

In my defense it is chilly in the office sometimes. I work with a bunch of men so the air is turned pretty low most of the time. This outfit is a example of that “Texifican” technique I was talking about earlier. The cardigan and tights have come off and I am ready to venture out into the real world where I would die of heat stroke otherwise. Do you live in a hot climate? If so, do you like to pretend its cold out too?:)

The Queen of Hearts DIY Costume

It’s finally here! My Halloween costume reveal! I worked on this all last week and am SO excited to show it to you! I’m all about do it yourself costumes! Nothing makes me more mad than going to a Halloween store and paying an arm and a leg for something I will wear only once or something that makes me look like a baby prostitute. I’m just going to be honest, I once liked those skimpy little costumes they sell…but really? A sexy Crayon….really? No thanks, I will stick with my DIY kind that I can make, reuse parts of, and be proud of when it’s all said and done! So here you have her…..the Queen of Hearts!
DIY Queen of Hearts Costume
I owned almost everything for this costume, which left it at a mere $5! I’m pretty sure that is an all time low! The tutu skirt is reused from last year’s Minnie Mouse costume, I just added a little bit more red tulle to it and cut out the hearts and spades from felt I got from Joann’s (30 cents per sheet). I wore black spandex shorts that I owned underneath though you could wear any black shorts, or just black leggings. The glittery dot tights were from Target last year and you can still get them here. The red heels are from Aldo about 5 years ago, but you could wear black or silver/gold if you don’t have red.

The card collar was probably the most intense part of the costume. I used photo squares that I have for scrapbooking to hold the cards together initially just to get the shape correct. I placed them where they wouldn’t be seen and then once they were all in place I taped the cards together more permanently with clear packing tape, once again, where you couldn’t see it. I then put a layer of modge podge on the cards to make them a little more stiff and heavy duty. If you cut out a piece of paper in the shape and size of your neck and follow along with the shape of it, it should fit and stay perfectly around your neck without help!  DIY Queen of hearts collar Queen of hearts card collar
The crown was made out of yellow craft foam I got from the children’s section of Joann’s. I cut the shape of the crown and then stapled it together in the back. The glittery foam hearts on it are also from the same section. They have sticky stuff on them already and I used them all around the crown AND to cover the staples on the back. Then, I attached it to a black headband.

My favorite detail is the playing card bracelet. I saw one of Etsy for $10 and I knew it would be easy to make. I made a few folds in the center of the card and then tied a red ribbon around it to make the bow shape. Then I cut a piece of black ribbon and tied it around my wrist with that! Oh, and who could forget the flamingos! The Queen of Hearts played croquet with flamingos, so I plan to use my summery flamingo cups from Party City when we have friends over on Halloween. DIY Card bracelet Queen of Hearts Playing Card Bracelet
DIY Tulle Tutu for Queen of Hearts Costume
This tutu was from under my Minnie Mouse costume last year. I bought it on clearance at Joann’s for pretty cheap because I didn’t want to stand in monstrous fabric cutting line. This year I moved the tulle pieces on it around so that there were chunks of colors instead of every other strand being different. I also added a little bit of extra red tulle. If you are not sure how to make a tulle tutu it’s super easy. You take a piece of elastic the size of your waist and tie or sew it into a circle. You then cute pieces of tulle twice the length you want the skirt to be and loop tie them around the elastic like shown in the photos below!

DIY Boo Wreath

DIY Boo Wreath for HalloweenFirst thing is first, this post should really be named, “I Hate Glitter”.  It’s hard to tell in the photos, but I sprinkled glitter on my Boo sign and it is now all over my entire house. It’s ridiculous. Now, onto the real point of the post: I love to craft. Finding time to craft is a whole different story, but when I get in crafting mode it’s on. Just you wait until Christmas time and the 12 days of Christmas Crafts…it gets crazy around these parts! Today’s craft is one that I have actually had the supplies for for about 3 years. Yes, I know…thats a long time but it’s true. I bought these cardboard cut out letters that say BOO at Hobby Lobby 3 years ago. I found them in a box when I was going through my craft room supplies and I kept them out specifically with the intention of making them into a pretty sign this year. It HAD to happen. Well, luckily it did and it was super easy to make too. I think my sign turned out amazingly!
Boo Halloween Craft

DIY Boo Cardboard Letters

  2. Cut out the letters and glue them on to the cardboard letters.
  3. Decorate with any fun Halloween-y scrapbook items you have lying around.
  4. Spray with Polyurethane spray or brush on your modpodge.
  5. Tie the letters together with your ribbon, tying the ribbon together in the back so that you can’t see the knot. (You can use a stapler too.)
  6. Tie a big bow at the top of the B leaving a little room to use as a hanger.
  7. Hang on your door or wall as the cutest Halloween decoration you could ever want!

Plaid Madness

Fall outfit inspiration with plaid and lace

There is SO much plaid going on right now! Everywhere you look there are plaid scarves, plaid shirts, plaid shoes, it’s madness and I love it! Plaid is, in my opinion, such a timeless pattern and it’s one of those that will never “go out of style”. Plaid reminds me of my childhood. You see, I had about 10 plaid skirts when I was in 5th grade. I remember because my Grandmother took me back to school shopping at The Limited Too and I bought all of them there along with their matching sweater vests and button downs. Yes, I was a preppy little 10 year old. It also reminds me a bit of Scotland and their kilts, where I visited as a child. You see, all sorts of childhood nostalgia comes along with plaid for me, which is probably why I like it so much:)

Everyone and their mother has the Zara blanket scarf, which is part of the reason I decided to get this one instead. They actually had a scarf identical to one from Zara at Target and I avoided that one as well. I was drawn to this one for some reason. Perhaps it was the bright red color or perhaps it was the softness, either way I love it and I will not be ashamed of my jumping on the plaid bandwagon! What fun fall bandwagons have you jumped on this year?
