That Whole Thigh Gap Thing…

The thigh gap.jpg

Hi Lovelies!

In less than one weeks time I will be running my very first half marathon. I am so nervous, but so excited. I ran 10 miles yesterday so I know I can do it, I just have this huge fear that I’m going to fall and break my leg or pass out right before the finish line. Yeah, yeah….I’m irrational, it’s what I do:) In order to celebrate being one week out, today’s post is about running/fitness/and that stupid thigh gap that people keep talking about.

To be honest with you, my legs have always been one of the things I have been the most self conscious about. I have never been one to wear shorts, even when it’s really hot out. When I do I constantly worry about the judgement of others. I posted a pair a few weeks ago and pushing that ‘Publish’ button was beyond hard for me. I wouldn’t say that my legs have ever been ‘fat’, but they’ve never been ‘thin’ either. Basically, my legs are not perfect, and I have never been okay with this. Even with all of my insecurities about my legs, it makes me really sad to see things like the “thigh gap” become a fad. Unless that “thigh gap” is there naturally for you (which for some people it is and that’s fine too) it probably isn’ a healthy achievement. I wish more women would get focused on being healthy than being “skinny” and having a thigh gap.

I got a comment on one of my posts a few weeks ago telling me that my legs were looking strong. Now, coming from the person it did, I KNOW it was a compliment, and I TOOK it as a compliment because I have worked hard on my legs. The thing that makes me sad, is that coming from someone else it might have been a snarky remark. I have seen it all too much in real life, women making fun of others for being muscular. Women being strong has not always been as “ok” as it is today, and it’s still not as “ok” as it should be. Having muscles or wanting to gain muscle as a woman has almost always been looked down upon. No one wants to look like a man after all, right? Wrong! You are never going to look like a man from lifting weights…you just aren’t! There isn’t enough testosterone in your body to make you look “like a man” (unless you put it there which is a whole different story). There are plenty of women out there who do bikini contests and pageants. Most of these ladies have a very low percentage of body fat and usually bigger muscles than most women. In my personal opinion they don’t “look like men”. Do you know how much work and dedication it takes to look like those people? Ummmm more than I will ever have for sure, and more than most women I know. So, trust me, if these ladies who work their butts off 3-4 hours or more per day don’t look like men, you’re not going to!

Lifting weights and working hard is going to help you gain muscles, or as most women like to call it “get definition”. It’s the same thing, different wording. Why? Because women are afraid of gaining anything. I have been running for a few months now, and you know what? I haven’t lost a pound. I didn’t weigh myself for 3 months and I did it on purpose. I knew that if I didn’t see that number heading downwards I would be discouraged and I would more than likely give up. But you know what? I am so glad I didn’t! I can tell a difference in my body without the scale. My legs don’t jiggle like they used to, my arms have muscles I had never seen before, and my stomach is shrinking before my eyes. I haven’t lost a pound because I have been GAINING muscle to replace the fat.

I’m not saying I’m muscular. I’m not saying I’m in great shape. I’m not saying I look perfect, I’m far from it. I’m just saying that I work hard to be healthy and I wish that more women would stop listening to the people who say you need a “thigh gap” and realize that they are beautiful anyways. My legs are strong. My legs can run 10 miles. My legs can lift weight, and heavy weight. My legs are not skinny. My thighs touch, but my legs are beautiful.

I read an article about women and muscle gain a few weeks ago, and if I could find it I would share with you. Alas, it has gotten lost in the abyss of the internet….If I find it I will be sure to come back and link it up!

How do you work to stay healthy?

Uniquely Lorna Jane

Lorna Jane Reflective Jacket

Hi Lovelies!

Oh my goodness has the weather been great these past few days! It has been sunny and beautiful and has just made me beyond happy. Well, today is the first official day of spring, so I guess the good weather came about just in time! As most of you know, I am training for a half marathon in April. It is less than a month away at this point, and I am freaking out. I ran 8 miles (yes, all at one time) this past week and I was actually fine, but all I kept thinking was that in the race I was going to have to run 5.1 more miles after that. I think I’ll be fine, I have been training hard, but I still have a little anxiety that I’m going to trip and fall, break my leg, or stop breathing at some point in those 13.1 miles.

One thing that has really helped me through this whole process is my work out gear. Yes, I know it’s girlie and silly, but the thought of getting new clothes, whether it’s for fun or running, just makes me happy. So, when Lorna Jane contacted me about trying their new Uniquely Lorna Jane line, I just about peed myself. (Another fear for race day…I am going to have to pee in that 13.1 miles I just know it!) The line is so much fun and all of the items are so versatile you could wear them out running or at the gym and then cross them over into your other activities.

Amy 3/4 Tights: c/o Lorna Jane, Reflect Active Jacket: c/o Lorna Jane, Seamless Tank Top: bebe sport, Shoes: New Balance from DSW, Water Bottle: Camelbak from Amazon, Sunglasses: Aldo, Headband: Hobby Lobby, Infinity Necklace: Christmas gift from Wes

The Amy 3/4 tights are my favorite. They aren’t full tights so I can wear them all through the year! I can’t do shorts when running long distances, I don’t have this “thigh gap” everyone keeps talking about and running 8 miles with your thighs touching…not cool. Capris like these are the only way to go for me, and this one even has a handy little pocket to put your money, keys, ID, anything you could want in.

The reflect active jacket is perfect for running on those cooler brisk mornings, or a weekend like last one where we had 20mph winds! It breaks the wind and you don’t feel one ounce of the chill, yet it’s not so heavy that you sweat in it. I also love that it’s reflective! Now with daylight savings time its darker in the mornings and the cars will be able to see you a mile away in this baby! This jacket could also be used for a casual outing with your girlfriends or lunch with the hubby . It’s the perfect add on to give a plain white t shirt a little extra oomph.

You should all join me for a Twitter party with @LornaJaneActive and @FitApproach tonight  at 7PM CST. we’re going to be chatting about fashion and fitness and celebrating the new Uniquely Lorna Jane line! The most active participant will win $150 gift card to Lorna Jane to try out the new line, plus more SweatPink & Uniquely Lorna Jane prizes! You can find out any info you need here!

One Month To Go…

Hi Lovelies!

There is only a little more than a month left until our half marathon and I am SO excited. I think we are just now realizing exactly what  we have gotten ourselves in to. Haha! We have an 8 mile run coming up this weekend and for some reason to me, that 8 mile mark is daunting! I’m not sure why 8 seems so much scarier and longer than 7, but it just does. Well, you know me, clothing is always a great motivator for me and picking out some great new running clothes will help me get excited for my run this weekend:)

Gym Stuff

I love everything up there, especially those shoes (these too) and the sports bra (I love this one and this one too)! I have a feeling that turquoise is going to be one of my colors of the summer.

Are any of you out there running a race this spring? How are you keeping yourself motivated?

Hi everyone. This is Tiffany this week. Maybe it was the name of this blog post or the peculiar picture of cattle running, but I was very intrigued in reading this post. I am so glad I did! I will never forget my days working a catering job in college. I had always wanted to be an event planner, and then I started catering. I thought the job sounded so glamorous! Weddings, champagne, cocktail dresses- ah. Then I saw the real deal. Those event planners busted their butts. They worked the longest hours, mostly weekends, and were not afraid to get their hands dirty. They went from sneakers to high heels right before the event. They dealt with stressful scenarios (“Where are the flowers?!”, “Why is the best man drunk?!”). It was an eye-opener!

Then I got to do my own event planning for a health care company. It wasn’t glamorous events. It was races- think the Muddy Buddy or a century bike race. Stress city. I said “goodbye” for a while to event planning. It was fun and amazing, just very different from what I expected.

If you are interested in what an event planner REALLY does, check out this awesome post. I love reading what many of you do in real life, ha. It is so cool to hear about your other jobs and hobbies other than blogging!

Lamm to the Laughter is an inspiring and fun blog written by Brianne. Brianne is an event planner, equestrian and traveler. Her blog is lovely. She writes about anything from a creme brulee recipe to thoughts on being the, ahem, “perfect wife”. Go be her friend, already!
Keep posting awesome content! You make it so fun for me to read all your posts! If you can, please link up a specific post. It makes it easier for us to come and visit!

*Remember YOU can be next weeks winner! :)

Just Keep Running….

Hi Lovelies!

Well, I have been running a few times a week since November and am on week 7 of my official training. Oh my goodness how much has changed! It’s so hard to believe that a few months ago I had to stop multiple times per mile and walk. I ran 6 miles yesterday. Ran. Yes, that’s right, I ran 6 miles straight. For all you regular runners that may not seem like much, but for a girl who hated running and could literally not run a full mile without walking 4 months ago….that is awesome! I stood in the garage after my run and marveled at the fact that my legs had just carried me 6 miles. I really think I could have run 4 more miles after just resting for a few minutes…this half marathon is in the bag!

Now, in terms of healthy eating….that is a whole different story. I have been doing well on my breakfasts and lunches having Fruit or oatmeal for breakfast and a sandwich or salad for lunch. It’s the dinners that kill me…I feel as though it’s an every other day kind of thing. One day I eat salmon and veggies, and the next I’m eating pizza or tacos. I really need to work on the consistency in my healthy eating, but at the same time I need to acknowledge that I am doing so much better than I used to! We only bought one box of Girl Scout cookies this year and they are long gone…I refuse to buy any more!

Move, Nourish, Believe Challenge: Week 2

Hi Lovelies!

Week 2 of the move, nourish, believe challenge with Lorna Jane and Fit Approach has come to an end. This week was all about nourishing our bodies and getting some great inspiration from each other in terms of food. This week was much harder for me than last week, because not only did I try and complete the challenge, I tried really hard to eat well the rest of the time as well. Let’s say that it all worked out minus Thursday night when we went to BJ’s and got pizza. Oops. Oh well, you mess up you move on, am I right? So, here is my recap of the challenges for the week! To follow along next week head on over to Instagram or Twitter and follow me:)

Monday: Go Meatless!

Today’s challenge was to go meatless. It actually wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be. I had fruit for breakfast, a salad with no meat for lunch, and pasta without meat for dinner. I love my steak way too much to be an actual vegetarian, but I was fine doing it for the one day.

veggies

Tuesday: Take Your Lunch To Work

I go home for my lunch most days so that I can take Sophie out for a little walk, so I didn’t take my lunch to work per say. I did, however, make my lunch instead of grabbing something on the way home. Yummy soup!

Newlywed cookbook

Wednesday: Write it down

I logged my meals today and realized that I do a lot more snacking than I probably should. Thankfully, the snacks aren’t awful, but I really should be eating more fruits and veggies for snacks. I did have a wonderfully fruity breakfast though!

Yummy fruit

Thursday: Smoothie Day

I loved Thursday. Smoothies are my favorite, especially strawberry banana ones! Being Valentine’s week, I had to use one of my red and white paper straws! <3

Friday: Go Raw!

Today was brutal, and if we are going to be honest I may have cheated just a tiny bit. <oops> We cater lunch every Friday at work and I totally forgot about the raw thing when I ordered my salad and it had cooked corn. My bad. I couldn’t put it to waste though!

Mason jar salad

There you have it! I have to say the raw and meatless days were extra tough for me. I know I wouldn’t be able to commit to these lifestyles, but they are fun to try for a day! Haha! Anyways, to learn more about becoming a Fit Approach Sweat Pink Ambassador like me, click here and go apply! Join me next weekend for my recap of week 3, this week is all about taking care of and pampering yourself! Yay!
